Sudha Varghese
Empowering Bihar's Marginalized: The Inspiring Journey of Sister Sudha Varghese
Ms. Varghese made millions of Musahar people realize that they too are human beings, they too have rights and they can and should raise their voices for their rights and against the injustice done to them.
In the 1980s, they started with a community that thought their women were destined to be raped and sexually assaulted. Ms Varghese, through decades of fighting in the streets, government offices and courts, has brought the community to a level where no one, no matter how caste or economically powerful, can escape the law after committing such heinous crimes. Can’t escape. She became their voice when they were voiceless and ultimately, she gave them their voice so that they could fight their own battles.
Literacy was an alien concept to the Musahars. The literacy rate of the Musahars was less than one percent, the lowest among all the Scheduled Castes of Bihar. Ms. Varghese has so far educated forty thousand children in the community. The girls studying in her Prerna School have shown on various international platforms that they can compete successfully even with students from developed countries like Japan, South Korea, Western Europe, America etc.
He lived his entire life with one dream for the upliftment of the Musahar people. Her quest took her thousands of kilometers on foot or by bicycle to every corner of Bihar, earning her the name ‘Cyclewali Didi’. Lakhs of Musahars living in tolas (huts) across the state know him by this name.
Twelve years of dedicated efforts are counted as tapas in Indian mythology. Sudha’s work in Bihar is nothing more than five consecutive tapasyas that lasted for almost six decades and are still going strong. He is a modern Karmayogi, who has spent days and nights with a selfless desire to empower the poorest, most oppressed and least educated and thus least empowered community even in the poorest state of the country.
Nari Gunjan (Women’s Voice) is a registered NGO, established in 1987 by Sudha Varghese. It became registered in 2000-2001. Over the years, Nari Gunjan has worked with thousands of deprived children and women in Bihar through formal and non-formal education centers, livelihood, sports and support groups. Since its inception, Nari Gunjan has spread its reach in Patna, Gaya, Saran and Purnea districts of Bihar
Empowering Through Education
With compassion and unwavering determination, Sudha Varghese began to meet with these women, providing them with a glimmer of hope and a vision for a better life. She encouraged them to attend meetings, where they could learn about their rights as women and citizens of India. Through these gatherings, the women gradually realized the significance of equality in a society where men held sway, and women were often treated as second-class citizens.
The Birth of Nari Gunjan
As women began to question the injustices they faced, a transformational moment occurred. It became evident that the oppressed rural women, Dalits, and agricultural laborers, needed to unite, giving birth to Nari Gunjan Women’s Voice in 1987. This organization was founded on the principles of empowerment, equality, and justice.
A Holistic Approach
Nari Gunjan’s mission was multi-faceted. They engaged with the most deprived sections of society – Dalits, women, and children – to raise awareness about their human dignity and equal rights. Education was the cornerstone of change, with a particular emphasis on enabling girls to access knowledge.
The organization also prioritized health awareness, encouraging preventive, curative, and promotive healthcare measures, especially among Dalits and economically disadvantaged groups. They identified and fought against violence and discrimination against women, while also promoting economic independence and self-confidence.
A Leadership Journey
One of the central tenets of Nari Gunjan’s work was to nurture leadership qualities among women. Potential leaders were encouraged to aspire to decision-making roles, effectively challenging the status quo.
